Well, it was bigger than I expected, and way more full of people and activity for a 9pm reservation! Granted, they are open till midnight, but still…
We couldn’t be seated any earlier than our reservation, but we had a drink at the bar. It was so busy, it did take a while before we could even get the bartender to make eye contact, but once our drinks came, they were fine. I felt like being a tad silly and ordered a champagne cocktail, only to be pleasantly surprised that it was tasty and pink (“An Affair to Remember” reference).
I really enjoyed the food at Les Halles! It has to be the French equivalent of what we consider “comfort food.” We ordered an assortment of clichéd French food, but man was it tasty! We started with escargot and pate with a basket full of bread and some of the creamiest butter I’ve lapped up in a long long time. We even used the bread to soak up the garlic butter from the escargot plate.
Our Entrees consisted of coq au vin and steak frites. Les Halles is known for their fries and they didn’t disappoint. The fries were crispy on the outside, yet tender on the inside, and they tasted like potatoes. The rooster (the menu said rooster so I can only imagine they wouldn’t lie!) was very tender without being mushy. The steak was prepared to order and topped with more butter.
To top off our clichéd meal, we ended with crepes suzette and “fallen” chocolate soufflé. The crepes are flambéed tableside, so you can’t be shy, but they were quiet delicious. The soufflé IMHO could have come with some fresh whipped cream, but that is the only complaint, if you could even call it a complaint.
