On a momentary why-the-hell-not click of the mouse on OpenTable.com for The French Laundry on a Wednesday, I found myself staring at an available lunch reservation for Sunday, Jan. 27th at 11:30am for a table of two. Usually you would just snag it and then decide, but this table needed a credit card to hold and came with a potential $100 per person cancellation fee. I knew if I wanted to get this, I had to seriously decide. I furiously typed an IM to my s.o. who didn't respond. I then tried his cell phone only to get voicemail. Grr. I said "F" it and plunked down my credit card and felt my stomach sink a little as I received the confirmation email that my reservation has been recorded. Only then did my s.o. call back and I had to explain the details. As always, he understood that once I got a crazy idea in my head, there really was no talking me off the ledge so he agreed to the trip. I also tried to make up for it by saying this trip would be my birthday/Valentine's gift and he didn't have to get me anything else. (Aside: he knows the one thing I am waiting on, regardless of what is ever said...)
With his blessing and an agreement to make this a Thomas Keller weekend, I grabbed a Saturday night dinner reservation at Bouchon, found a place in walking distance to both establishments, booked a Southwest flight and a rental car, and we were off.
