L.A. Newscasters

Granted, I never liked watching the local news on TV even when I was young, but I don't recall thinking that Hal Fishman, Jerry Dunphy and Ann Martin were a bunch of unprofessional jack@$$es. Yet, why do I think that about today's newscasters all the time?

Well, it probably doesn't help that the females tend to look like this (Mia Lee):

Act like this:

Or dress like teenagers.

Where is the professionalism? I actually feel for Carlos Amezcua because I think he's one of the few newscasters on L.A. television who is trying to maintain his composure and do his job by reading the news. He keeps it simple with suit and tie - no muss, no fuss.

The ladies, on the other hand, have put aside the simple power suits for the weirdest dresses or cutout tops or frilly sheer nothings that below at the mall and no behind (or standing, for that matter) a news desk. These women over 40 should dress nice but respectably and age-appropriately. It is not the newscaster's job to promote any sense of fashion - the job is to tell the news (as schlocky as local newscasting can be); I do not want to be distracted by thinking, "Oh my gawd, what was she thinking?" based on her clothes.

Is it really impossible to want the news to be simple and serious? I guess that is what cable news is for, but even they feel the need to play up to being flashy and "busy."

Let's face it - no newscasters on network television can really be called a journalist now a days. And based on the "quality" of stories being put out, I don't think the care much at all. Thank gawd for the Internets.
