Conan

I guess I can blog while sitting in the juror waiting room and I realized I haven't discussed The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien!

Judgement?

A fine start!  It's been so long since I've seen genuine enthusiam at the 11:30pm slot.  While I have respect for Letterman, age and anger has made him quite the curmudgeon so watching Late Show is painful (plus that network blows).  And don't get me started on how lame and crappy Leno was.  I also heard from some good inside sources that he was a complete prick to the old Carson regime.  Nice guy, right?

Yet here comes Conan still being upbeat, silly, witty, and genuinely enthused and honored to carry on a legacy.  How f*cking refreshing!

Yeah, the show isn't flawless and there are some obvious quirks that need to be fixed.  I love Andy Richter but I find his side-laughter a bit annoying - it comes a bit sycophantic.  I'm sure he does find Conan funny, but I don't think the audience needs to hear it so much (we don't need another Paul Schaeffer).

With a few exceptions (crazy Eddie Murphy - wha' happen'd?), Conan is able to continue a great rapport with his guests.  A personal favorite is his handshake with his musical guests - he looks them in the eye, shakes each member's hand, says "thank you," and means it; that always makes me smile.  Letterman sounds like he cares when it is a band he likes or who really rocked it, but he loves music so he's always a gentleman.  As for Leno? That guy couldn't care less who these turds (as he saw them) were who came on that show.  Leno barely shook a hand, hardly provided eye contact, and never seemed pleased or excited.

I can only hope that America is coming to understand and embrace the 'Conando' - the brain behind some SNL and some of the BEST Simpsons. Episodes. Ever.

Long live the new king of late night - heart you Conan O'Brien!
